SHOCKING DEATH OF A STONEMASON AT CHURCH.
John Huddlestone, a stonemason, residing at Church-street, Church, met
with a fearful death on Monday afternoon. Some cottages are in course
of erection in Church Kirk-lane, and about four o'clock on Monday afternoon
Huddlestone went to the buildings to see how the joiners were getting
on with their work and to ascertain if they would be ready for him resuming
his labours next day. He ascended a scaffold, and with a view of being
able to see what had been done he attempted to raise himself by a top
window stone, which slightly projected. He was a heavy man, and the
stone having nothing upon it came topling over. It crushed him down
upon the scaffolding, which broke, and on his being released he was
found to be dead, the stone having struck him on the face and crushed
it and his head in a fearful manner. The inquest was held on Tuesday
afternoon, before Mr. Hargreaves, coroner , at the Thorn Inn, when a
verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
